Arts & Crafts with the Kiddos
Having the kids home for the summer is... busy. But it's also so special. There's truly nothing like quality time with your little ones.
One of our favorite ways (and our kiddos' favorite ways) to spend that time is on art projects. We think you should Always Be Creative, so we're totally in support of this ;)
We've pulled together some of ours and our kids' favorite arts and crafts projects, and the supplies we keep on hand for impromptu creating. Keep reading!
My kids love making / writing their own books. River is super into using office supplies- staplers tape and he writes these great books start to finish with lots of great drawings.
Coloring books are also so fun to have for being creative and even quiet time. The "Be You and Own It" coloring book has become such a fave! It was created right here in Nashville an has the best message. The pages are great to color; both my kids have a copy and love it!
Scout loves making jewelry so we have all kinds of string and tons of beads. She makes everyone bracelets and necklaces – even her dolls!
Making structures with all different size popsicle sticks is a fave with both my kids.
A simple, fun project is "stained glass." First, use construction paper and cut out a design. Then, lay it on the sticky part of a clear contact paper sheet. Put pieces of tissue paper in all colors on the contact paper and then cover with another sheet of contact paper. Then, you can cut around the piece and hang in the window! The kids love it. P.S.: You can get already cut small squares of tissue paper on Amazon!
I also have a chest full of art supplies and like to just pull out tons of stuff and let them go wild and make whatever they want! Paint, glitter (yes, glitter!), pom-pom balls, googly eyes, washi tape, etc.
My girls loooove crafting. I keep white Butcher Paper on hand at all times. Actually, our breakfast table is covered in this paper with a jar of crayons on the table so the girls can color anytime they want.
Glitter is a source of contention in our house. Ha! My husband hates it and actually tried to "ban" it. He failed miserably. With two princesses, glitter is a necessary evil. We can't have enough. I do prefer glitter paint or glue to help with the mess. I love the Mama Papa Bubba glitter glue paint.
Heirloom Paint Brushes: My Grandmother, Louette was an amazing artist. She painted all the time. One of my favorite things I have is a ton of her old paintbrushes. Originally, I was just going to put them in the attic and save them because they are so special but... I've since decided to let my girls paint with them. It's so special to see them making art with the tools she made art with.
